Description:
The upper courtyard leads to the southern section of the inner fortress. This part of the castle is considered one of the strongest mediaeval defence systems ever built. It consists of three towers, two of which are strictly for defensive purposes (south east and central towers). The third circular tower (in the south west) is the Warden's Tower which contains the quarters of the Grand Master of the Hospitallers. This tower has a circular room with interesting architectural features. From this area, one has great views of the northern part of the castle, as well as the moat in the south, along with the surrounding green hills. It is said that on a clear, haze-free, day, one is able to see as far as Safita Castle (Chastel-Blanc), the Mediterranean waters, and Mount Lebanon.
